قدمت بعضُ وفودِ العربِ على عمرَ بن
عبدِ العزيز رضي الله عنه ..
وكان فيهم شابّ ، فقامَ وتقدّمَ وقالَ:

يا أميرَ المؤمنين ، أصابتْنا سنونٌ عجاف؛
سنةٌ أذَابت الشّحمَ ..
وسنةٌ أكلت اللحمَ ..
وسنةٌ أذابت العظْمَ! ..
وفي أيدِيكُم فضولُ أموالٍ ،
فإنْ كانتْ لنا ؛ فعلامَ تمْنعوهَا عنّا!
وإنْ كانتْ للهِ فَفَرّقُوها على عبادِ اللهِ ،
وإنْ كانتْ لكم فتَصدّقُوا بها علينَا ،
إنّ اللهَ يجْزي المُتصدّقينَ!

فقالَ عمرُ : مَا تَركَ لنَا الأعرابيُّ عذرًا في واحِدةٍ !
